Ataturk Lisesi Parents’ Association (ALPA) is the organization of parents of students who study in Ataturk Secondary school located in Giresun by the Black sea. The membership is approximately 700. This region is known as an area of high unemployment. Many people from this area have emigrated to big cities in Turkey like Istanbul, Bursa or have gone abroad to work. Hazelnut production is the main economic/agricultural activity in the Giresun region. However, most of the adult population work only during harvest time in the summer period. Many members of the ALPA are unemployed.
The expectation amongst the ALPA is to learn more about European citizenship by taking part in this European partnership project. From the Turkish perspective, European citizenship relates to becoming more modern and to respect people of different social, educational and cultural backgrounds. It is considered important that members learn to appreciate the value of lifelong learning and how adult education operates in Europe and to bring these ideas back to the home country. Specifically, the goal is that staff and members will get to know Europe and enhance knowledge about participation in the European Union.
